The winter makes it hard for me to get things done out in the garage.
Its hard for me to get things done in the winter. The cold bleak weather just yearns to suck the life from the depths of my soul. The garage doors being closed and the chill in the air make it harder to get things done. When the sun is out and the air is warm its easy to stay on task until 9 or 10 in the evening, in Janurary not so much.
It seems like in the winter I used to only head out to the garage to take care of something quick. Be it grabing a tool or doing a quick repar, I’d get back in the house as quick as I could. I’d leave my stuff where I was working on it as soon as I was done and get my butt back in the warmth of house. Doing that leaves the garage a mess, my tools scattered and my mind in the same state. I hate to admit how much time I spend between the end of November and beginning of March just killing time.

This year things are a bit different. Ive been working on the bikes through the winter, not every day or honestly as often as I’d like, but I have been making progress. Ive also been spending a lot of time on this, learning CAD, trying to track down equipment and learning everything I can about things that im interested in doing. Here are a few of the topics
- Fusion 360: I have an inkling a CNC machine is in my near future. I may want to learn how to draw the things I want to make,
- Basic sewing, embroidery and what machines are best for both.: Ive got some seats to cover and thats a pretty big expense. Plus it would be incredible to make my own patches, jackets and so on.
- Web Design: I needed to make a site, well three actually, so I had to brush up a bit. This is the first, the second will be for the mechanical side of the thimgs im doing and the other more for the decorative. Those will come after this one if I ever finish it.
Having a goal changed everything
Instead of just going out to tinker this year I have a had a purpose. Every swing of the hammer, turn of the wrench and push of the broom brings me closer to my goal. Knowing that makes everything easier, working toward something you love makes it more enjoyable.
So get your butt up, set a goal and chase it. You dont have to make huge strides, every small step forward is still a step in the right direction. Those small steps add up and make something huge seem small when you take the time to enjoy them. That’s something I’ve never done before, now Im enjoying the journey and not just busting my hump to the destination. I do have to agree with the statement its not the destination that matters, Its how you get there. I never figured I’d say that…..
